Saju: Korea’s Four Pillars of Destiny
Before horoscopes and personality tests, Korea had saju (사주, “four pillars”): a way of reading the exact moment you were born that has been passed down for centuries. Find your birth element — one of ten Day Masters — free, in seconds, on your own device.
Four pillars, eight characters, five elements
The year, month, day and hour of your birth are each written as two characters from an ancient sixty-part cycle: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. Those four pillars make eight characters, and each belongs to one of five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Saju reads their balance: which elements are strong in you, and which are quiet.
The first character of your birth day is called the Day Master. In the tradition it stands for you, and the rest of the chart is read in relation to it.
The ten Day Masters
- 甲 Gap · Yang Wood — The Great Tree. Rooted and upright; grows toward the light slowly and steadily.
- 乙 Eul · Yin Wood — The Flowering Vine. Supple and resourceful; finds a way around what cannot be moved.
- 丙 Byeong · Yang Fire — The Sun. Warm and open; lights up a room without trying.
- 丁 Jeong · Yin Fire — The Candle. Quiet and focused; gives warmth close up.
- 戊 Mu · Yang Earth — The Mountain. Solid and unhurried; the ground others stand on.
- 己 Gi · Yin Earth — The Garden Soil. Nurturing and practical; helps things grow.
- 庚 Gyeong · Yang Metal — The Raw Metal. Direct and resolute; sharpened by pressure.
- 辛 Sin · Yin Metal — The Jewel. Refined and precise; shines when polished.
- 壬 Im · Yang Water — The Ocean. Broad and restless; moves with big currents of ideas.
- 癸 Gye · Yin Water — The Rain. Gentle and perceptive; quietly changes what it touches.

Questions
Does it predict the future?
No. It describes the tradition’s picture of your birth as a way to reflect — never events, health or fortune. Please don’t use it for important decisions.
How is it different from Chinese BaZi?
Saju and BaZi share the same four pillars. Saju is the Korean way of reading them, and the characters are read aloud in Korean (甲 is “Gap”).
Do I need my birth hour?
No. Without it you get three pillars instead of four; everything else, including your Day Master, stays the same.

태어난 해·달·날·시를 각각 천간과 지지 두 글자로 적으면 여덟 글자가 됩니다. 글자마다 나무·불·흙·쇠·물 다섯 기운 중 하나에 속하고, 사주는 그 균형을 읽습니다. 태어난 날의 첫 글자인 일간은 나 자신을 뜻합니다.

- 丙(병) 양의 불 — 태양. 애쓰지 않아도 주변을 밝힙니다.
- 丁(정) 음의 불 — 촛불. 가까이에서 조용히 온기를 전합니다.
- 戊(무) 양의 흙 — 큰 산. 남들이 딛고 서는 든든한 땅입니다.
- 己(기) 음의 흙 — 텃밭의 흙. 무엇이든 자라게 돕습니다.
- 庚(경) 양의 쇠 — 무쇠. 곧고 결단력 있게, 압력 속에서 벼려집니다.
- 辛(신) 음의 쇠 — 보석. 다듬어질 때 가장 빛납니다.
- 壬(임) 양의 물 — 큰 바다. 커다란 생각의 흐름을 타고 움직입니다.
- 癸(계) 음의 물 — 비. 조용히 스며들어 닿는 것을 바꿉니다.
